Bicycles and the Amsterdam Canals at Night
Americans have a genuine affection for Holland. We like to study her history, we sympathize with her struggle for independence, and we compare her national hero — the great Stadthouder William the First of Orange — with our own hero, George Washington.
Two distinct faces to Amsterdam
There are two distinct faces to Amsterdam: one, the quiet graceful old town of endless canals, narrow houses and tiny winding streets; the other, the harsh reality of twentieth-century capitalist consumerism: fast food, fast sex, loud music and drug pushing. The two sides live incongruously together and have made Amsterdammers famed for their tolerance of different standards and others’ opinions. There are so many things to experience in this city that it is pretty well essential to see it during any comprehensive European tour. The best time to visit Amsterdam is early June, for the Festival of Fools; you can also buy bulbs and herrings.

The Grand Opening for the Brooklyn Bridge
The grand opening for the bridge was held on May 24, 1883. Some Irish residents of New York took offense as the day happened to be the birthday of Queen Victoria, but most of the city turned out to celebrate.
President Chester A. Arthur came to New York City for the event and led a group of dignitaries who walked across the bridge. Military bands played, and cannons in the Brooklyn Navy Yard sounded salutes.
A number of speakers lauded the bridge, calling it a “Wonder of Science” and lauding its anticipated contribution to commerce. The bridge became an instant symbol of the age.
More than 125 years after its completion, the bridge still functions everyday as a vital route for New York commuters. And while the roadway structures have been changed to accommodate automobiles, the pedestrian walkway is still a popular attraction for strollers, sightseers, and tourists.

Building the Brooklyn Bridge
Of all the engineering advances in the 1800s, the Brooklyn Bridge stands out as perhaps the most famous and most remarkable. It took more than a decade to build, cost the life of its designer, and was constantly criticized by skeptics who thought the entire thing was going to fall into New York’s East River.
When it opened on May 24, 1883 the world took notice and the entire United States celebrated. And the bridge, with its majestic stone towers and graceful steel cables, isn’t just a beautiful New York City landmark. It’s also a very dependable route for many thousands of daily commuters.
